If you have no space for gardening, or even if you live in a high rise apartment, you can still enjoy the freshness and health benefits of herbs you have grown yourself. Herbs are ideal for container or indoor gardening, and even if all you can offer them is a sunny windowsill or tiny balcony, your herbs will flourish, giving you access to culinary wizardry and home remedies.
You can choose from a variety of containers to suit your space, and depending on how many different herbs you have room for. Half a dozen small clay pots on a windowsill will give you room for chives, parsley, basil, lemon balm, tarragon, and thyme, for example, a nice selection of culinary herbs.
Use a good quality plotting soil, and plant your seeds or cuttings in the pots. Place them in a sunny spot, and water them regularly but don't over water. Herbs can cope with dryer conditions. Once they have grown to a usable size, keep them trimmed with regular use of herbs in your cooking. A window box will also suffice to give you a nice variety of herbs to choose from.
If you really do not have a lot of room, you can use a stacking pot, which has little openings from which herbs grow. These are sometimes known as strawberry pot. This pot, available from crateandbarrel, would be ideal for container gardening, as well as very decorative. It can be placed anywhere that gets sunshine, such as a balcony, or near French doors.
If you are not sure how to begin, or which herbs to choose, an indoor gardening kit could be the answer. This herb kit from Amazon provides with one of the best selections on the market, including such desirable herbs as marjoram, oregano and garlic. You can use the starter kit to propagate your herbs, then transfer them to containers later on. There are also kits available for herbal teas, and Italian herbs.
If you want to grow herbs that will be useful for personal care products and home remedies, you may wish to grow some larger herbs such as rosemary and lavender. These can also be grown in containers, preferably on a balcony, or near a large window which can be opened to allow sunlight and air to invigorate the plant. Lavender is an especially useful herb, since its fragrance will sweeten the air, and it can be picked and dried and used in pot pourri, or steeped in alcohol to produce a perfume which can be added to personal products, such as shampoo.
Growing herbs is a fulfilling gardening activity, and one which can be enjoyed even if you have very little space - and the fragrance of fresh herbs in your apartment will be an extra bonus!
