Choosing Containers For Container Gardening There are thousands of containers that are great for gardening. Depending on your budget, the plants you plan to grow and how you want your garden to look, some are better than others. Here are some things to consider when buying containers for your garden.
The most important thing to consider is how much space your plants will need when fully grown. Transplanting a nearly full-grown plant can shock it severely, enough so that it may die. Also make sure your container has adequate drainage. You don't want your plants to drown from over-watering either by accident or from rain. If you're growing edible plants make sure the material isn't toxic to people (or to the plants). This can be an issue with treated wood. I suggest lining wood planters with plasic, or placing pots in the planter, rather than filling it with soil.
For large containers you might want to consider placing them on a wheeled platform or dolly to make them easier to move. Then you can quickly and easily move your large plants to take advantage of the sun or to get them out of inclement weather.
Many household items can be recycled into planting containers, saving money and helping the environment. It can also make a unique attractive look depending on what you use. Consider cut-off milk jugs and detergent jugs, styrofoam containers and coolers, cinder blocks, drainage pipe and whatever else you have around the house. Decorate your home-made containers with paints, permanent markers, ribbon or whatever tickles your fancy. Remember - the containers have a lot to do with the attractiveness of your container garden.
